How to Set an Efficient Sprinkler Watering Schedule

The best watering schedule waters deeply and infrequently, early in the morning, adjusted for your grass, soil, and season. Fewer, longer soakings grow deep roots; daily sprinkles grow shallow, thirsty lawns.

Deep and infrequent beats daily and shallow

The instinct to water a little every day is exactly backwards. Light daily watering keeps moisture at the surface, so roots stay shallow and the lawn wilts the moment you skip a day. Longer, less frequent watering pushes moisture deep into the soil, and roots follow it down. A deep-rooted lawn is more drought-tolerant, more disease-resistant, and needs less water overall.

The practical target for most established lawns is watering 2 to 3 times per week, not daily, delivering a good soak each time. Newly seeded or sodded lawns are the exception; they need frequent light watering until established.

The "1 inch per week" rule

A common baseline is that lawns want about 1 inch of water per week, including rainfall, during the growing season. In hot, dry, or peak-summer conditions that can climb toward 1.5 inches or more; in cool spring and fall it drops well below.

The catch is that you cannot feel "1 inch." You have to measure what your sprinklers actually put down, and that is easier than it sounds.

The tuna-can (catch-cup) test

Empty tuna or cat-food cans are almost exactly 1 inch tall, which makes them perfect gauges.

  1. Scatter 4 to 6 identical cans across a single zone, some near heads and some far.
  2. Run that zone for a set time, say 15 minutes.
  3. Measure the depth of water in each can and average them.
  4. Do the math: if 15 minutes gave you 0.25 inch on average, the zone applies 1 inch per hour, so you need about 60 minutes per week for that zone (split across sessions).

Run the test per zone, because sprays and rotors apply water at very different rates. The spread between your fullest and emptiest can also reveals coverage problems worth fixing; see sprinkler head spacing if the cans vary a lot.

Tip: Different zones almost always need different run times. A spray zone might hit 1 inch in 20 minutes while a rotor zone needs an hour for the same depth. This is why you never mix head types on one zone, as covered in how to calculate sprinkler zones.

Cycle and soak to stop runoff

On clay soil or any slope, water arrives faster than the ground can absorb it, and the excess runs off into the street. You are wasting water and still not watering deeply. The fix is cycle and soak: instead of one long run, split it into two or three shorter cycles with a soak break between.

For example, rather than 30 minutes straight, run 10 minutes, wait 30 minutes to an hour for it to absorb, run 10 more, wait, then run the last 10. The lawn receives the same total water but has time to drink it in. Most modern controllers can automate this. Sandy soils that absorb quickly rarely need it.

Adjust for grass, soil, and season

The 1-inch rule is a starting point. Three factors move it:

  • Grass type. Cool-season grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass) grow in spring and fall and often need a bit more water in summer heat. Warm-season grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine) thrive in summer heat and go dormant in cool weather, needing little to no water then.
  • Soil type. Sandy soil drains fast and wants shorter, more frequent watering. Clay holds water and wants longer intervals with cycle-and-soak. Loam sits comfortably in between.
  • Season. Water need tracks heat and daylight. Peak summer may need double what spring does, and many lawns need almost nothing in late fall.

Water in the early morning

The best time to water is early morning, roughly 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. Wind and evaporation are lowest, pressure is often best, and the grass blades dry as the sun rises, which discourages fungal disease. Avoid midday (much of the water evaporates) and avoid evening (leaves stay wet all night, inviting disease).

Note: Schedule your full cycle to finish before the sun is high, not start then. If you have many zones running one after another, back the start time up so the last zone still ends in the cool morning hours.

A sample seasonal schedule

The table below is an illustrative starting point for a cool-season lawn with spray zones in a temperate US climate. Treat the minutes as placeholders until your catch-cup test dials them in, and expect hotter or drier regions to need considerably more.

Rotor zones would run roughly two to three times these minutes to apply the same depth, because they cover ground more slowly. When the season ends, do not just switch the controller off; drain the system so pipes do not freeze, as covered in winterize your sprinkler system.

Let the controller do the adjusting

Resetting run times every few weeks is tedious, so most people don't, and the lawn suffers. Two features solve this:

  • Seasonal adjust (water budget). A single percentage dial that scales every zone up or down, so you bump everything to 120% in July and 60% in October without touching individual times.
  • Smart / weather-based controllers. These pull local weather or use an on-site sensor to skip watering after rain and adjust automatically. A rain sensor alone, which pauses a scheduled cycle when it rains, is an inexpensive upgrade that pays for itself. See valves and controllers.
